Patio season is here, and although it is short, us Canadians try to soak up as much of it as possible! I was inspired by the easy breezy hues of blues to transform our patio into a little relaxing oasis. If you’re looking to spruce up your small patio or balcony space, I’m sharing chic tips to help you out!

When it comes to styling your small outdoor space, the first thing you need to decide is how you plan on using it— Outdoor dinner parties or lounging in the sun? Unlike a large backyard, it is a little more difficult to have different sections for lounging and dining. So my best tip is to stick to one use but that can still be multifunctional. We opted for more of a living space that we could relax but also host a few friends and family.
When picking furniture, you always should keep in mind the size and how it would work for your smaller space—We definitely don’t want it to feel crowded. The Sedona 2-piece Patio Set was an absolute dream and the base of my patio makeover. I instantly fell in love with its modern and chic design! The perfect corner sofa with a lower back that allows the space to feel more open and has two great table areas to place drinks and food, which is a huge bonus when entertaining. Not to mention, that it is actually one of the most comfortable outdoor sofas I have ever sat or lounged on… It’s actually more comfortable than my living room. 😅
In small spaces, try to steer clear from picking too many colors in your decor. Having a minimal color palette is a little easier on the eyes and gives the illusion of a larger space. We went for different shades of blues, white, tan and natural finishes for texture. I’m in love with this color palette so much, that I want to incorporate it into my decor inside. It’s simply serene and relaxing.
Plants always add life and personality to your space. I tend to be a minimalist when it comes to decor and my thumb isn’t the greenest, so I opted for very low maintenance tropical plants. Keeping with the color theme, of course, you can always find great outdoor pots for your plants! Now, if you claim that you’re a serial plant killer, don’t fret! Faux plants are always a fab option. They’re fuss-free and still look as great as the real ones.
We added an umbrella to block out the sun that’s beaming on the balcony mid-day. Unlike the standard patio umbrella, we loved that the Shanghai Hanging Patio Umbrella hangs over the lounging area, so I can tuck it in the corner of our balcony and it will still keep us in the shade. Sadly, the one pictured isn’t available online anymore. It sold out quickly, which isn’t much of a surprise since it’s such a great price ($249) BUT there are still some available in stores. Another great alternative is the Tilting-Top Patio Umbrella in black which is available online only.
Totally not decor related but necessary for us…I don’t know about you, but our BBQ gets used more than our oven during the spring/summer season, so it was important for us to make sure that we had more than enough space to add it to our patio. With 6 stainless steel burners plus one of the side, extra large cooking space, and electronic ignition, this Grill Chef BBQ checked every requirement on our list! Perfect for entertaining and making larger grilled dinners.
A HUGE thank you to The Brick for helping us create our little outdoor oasis. Since we’ve been in our new home, our outdoor space was very neglected. Sometimes, you don’t realize how much potential a room can have until you really take the time and map it out. I have to say, we’ve never spent as much time on the patio in these last couple of weeks than we have in the last 5 years. Now we’re ready to spend our summer enjoying our new patio soaking up all the sunshine, and share some of our favorite entertaining and grill recipes with you!
